    New York Day Trips

In summer, tourist attractions that make the best day trips are boat trips around Manhattan or up the Hudson, trips to beaches on Long Island or Fire Island, horseback riding, and shopping, and visiting wineries.

Music includes classical venues and top name groups in places like Jones Beach on Long Island where you can combine a day of fun in the sun with an evening concert.

In fall and winter, there are spectacular foliage tours, a family day out apple or pumpkin picking, winery visits, as well as a number of ski lodges in the Catskills and other mountain areas for a day of fun on the slopes.

For most attractions in the farther reaches of town, simply hop on the subway or bus, and don't forget a host of free New York city summer attractions going on all season long.

For more outlying locations, there are regularly scheduled trains and buses to lure the big city dweller or New York City tourist. With so much to see and do for every age group, it's easy to understand why these outings are so popular with families.

Below, check out our guide to our top picks for New York City short hops, with information on hours, admission prices, and directions on how to get there and out of town, if only for a day ...
