If
touring an art museum with your kids is not high on your
list of things to do in New York - better rewrite the
list.
Since
the doors of the Children's Art Museum opened in 1988,
CMA has been delighting kids and parents alike.
New
York City's first hands-on art museum for children welcomes
visitors who come in for a short visit. They also support
ongoing art activities for local kids.
Focusing
on youngsters aged 1 to 12 years old the space has plenty
for the young artist to do. Paint, glue, paper and recycled
materials provide inspiration for guided creative imaginings.
For the younger set with a shorter attention span the
ball pond is a sure winner when the artistic efforts get
boring. A great place to expend some of that energy saved
up from a day of doing grownup stuff.
They
can also play in the art house, or try independent art
projects. Wandering through the exhibitions of children's
art will entrance kids of all ages - including the over
30's in your group. For a sample visit their virtual
gallery.
One
of the things my kids enjoyed most when they traveled
was getting together with kids their own age. The Museum
is a terrific place to meet New York families. This will
be one of the high points of your children's New York
experience - and you'll enjoy it too.
On
a commercial street close to Chinatown, you'll have no
trouble recognizing the museum. It's the colorful building
with the zebra beckoning you to stop in.
Little
Italy with it's fantastic eateries, the New York City
Fire Museum, Fraunces Tavern Museum, World Trade Center
Viewing Area, Federal Reserve Bank, New York Stock Exchange,
and South Street Seaport are all nearby.
