in the mid-19th century, the Manhattan Club on fashionable
Fifth Avenue was often frequented by the likes of the Vanderbilts
along with leading Democrats of the day, including future
U.S. Presidents James Buchanan and Franklin Pierce.
First served in the smoke-filled
card rooms of New York's original "old boy's club"
was this potent concoction today still served in New York
bars as the macho alternative to trendy lite beer and white
wine ...
Ingredients:
2 ounces rye
1/2 to 1 ounce sweet vermouth
How to Make It:
Fill a large mixing glass with
ice. Add ingredients, stir vigourously and strain into a
cocktail glass. Garnish with a maraschino cherry.
Dry Manhattan:
Substitute dry vermouth. Garnish with lemon twist.
Perfect Manhattan: Substitute half dry, half sweet
vermouth.
Latin Manhattan: Substitute half dry, half sweet
vermouth and 1 ounce rum. Garnish with a lemon twist.
