NOTE:
In
Olde New York, "apple" was a slang term for a
woman of a certain profession. Sweet,
tart & immoral, 19th century New York grew to include
more houses of ill-repute than anywhere else in America.
Soon,
reformers and religious leaders condemned the city as "The
Big Apple" for turning a blind eye to its naughty and
illicit behavior.
Today,
the famous moniker is usually attributed to the town's rise
as a top U.S. jazz venue, and the old show biz phrase, "there
are many apples on the tree, but only one Big Apple."
