New York Cocktails -> Tom & Jerry

    Tom & Jerry cocktail

At the Metropolitan Hotel in the mid-1800's "Professor" Jerry Thomas held sway over the bar with his How to Mix Drinks, or The Bon Vivant's Companion, the first bartender's guide in print for wide circulation.

Included was this recipe for his own "Tom and Jerry" which today remains a holiday favorite, and perfect for any snow-covered day in NYC...

    Ingredients:

1 egg, separated 3/4 ounce brandy
1 tbsp. sugar 2/3 cup hot milk
    3/4 ounce dark rum Nutmeg

    How to Make It:

In small bowls, beat yolk and egg white separately.

In an 8-ounce mug, mix yolk and egg together.

Add rum and brandy and fill with hot milk. Top with nutmeg.
